Changing your 2011-2014 Mustang GT Automatic Transmission Fluid is necessary. It must be done correctly so your transmission fluid will beat the correct level. We recommend you change your 6R80 automatic 6 spd transmission fluid and filter about every 50,000 km – 60,000 km. Your 2011-2014 Mustang GT 6R80 automatic transmission takes 11.9 quarts or 11.2 liters of transmission fluid for a complete fill. This transmission has no engine bay dip stick. The dip stick is located underneath the car on the transmission itself on the passenger side. When changing fluid or checking the fluid level. Car must be level, so best done on a lift. The transmission oil pan has no drain plug. So the whole pan must be removed to do an oil change and filter change.

To do a proper oil change for this 6R80 transmission. You cannot just take off the oil pan, let drain, then put pan back on and fill. If you do it this way you will only be replacing about 3-4 quarts or so of transmission oil. To do a proper complete oil change you must remove all the old fluid. Then replace it with fresh fluid. This needs to be done using a special pump/machine. Which flushes out all of the old trans fluid while replacing it with fresh clean fluid.
We highly recommend you get your Mustang GT automatic transmission fluid changed at the dealer. Ford has the correct equipment to do this job properly. It is expensive, but it is worth it knowing your automatic transmission will last. When the transmission fluid is replaced in the proper manner. As to which transmission fluid is best to use. We highly recommend to stay with the factory fill transmission fluid Ford Motorcraft Mercon LV. Some people are recommending using other automatic transmission fluids such as Royal Purple, Redline, Valvoline, ETC. While these are good high quality transmission fluids. The Ford Mercon LV is just as good and will actually usually last longer. So there is really no reason to switch to another brand of transmission fluid.
To check your Mustang GT 6R80 automatic transmission fluid level yourself, here is the procedure
- Must be done on flat level ground, either on jack stands or a lift.
- Must be idling in park at normal operating temperature.
- Use the Dip stick to check oil level, it is located on passenger side just above the transmission oil pan.
