2013 Dodge Viper Review and Test

Let’s start off with the best part of the 2013 SRT Viper. The all new Dodge Viper is powered by a new all aluminum 8.4-liter V10 that SRT estimates delivers 640 horsepower at 6150 rpm and 600 pound-feet of torque at 4950 rpm. SRT claims that the Viper has the most torque of any naturally aspirated sports car engine world-wide. The 2013 Viper has an increase of 40 more horsepower over the 2010 Viper.

The new Dodge Viper chassis has a 50-percent improvement in the torsional stiffness over the previous generation Vipers. A race ready rigid chassis is the big key to very sharp handling, high speed stability, and ultimate ride quality and control. The Viper is now approximately 200 pounds lighter than the previous-generation Vipers. The new 2013 Viper now weighs in at about 3,200 pounds, the 2013 Viper GTS with optional SRT Track Package will weigh in at about 3,220 pounds. Weight distribution for the new Viper is 49.6 percent front and 50.4 percent rear. The front track is also now wider than on the previous Vipers.

The Vipers suspension now looks like something right out of a race car, and it is. Aluminum unequal-length upper and lower A arms along with short upper arms and long lower arms are designed to provide optimum camber to keep the very large P355/30ZR19 tires in maximum contact with the road. Performance coil springs, gas-charged Bilstein monotube dampers and tubular stabilizer bars front/rear complete the awesome setup. The upgrade 2013 Viper GTS will feature a two-mode adjustable suspension for even more race-car handling for street or track.

Vipers now have a new structural X-brace that ties the four corners of the engine compartment together, this is borrowed directly from Viper GTS-R and Competition Viper Coupe race models. The aluminum brace will enhance steering response and makes the whole car much stiffer. Also a new aluminum impact beam placed at the front of the 2013 SRT Viper contributes to overall mass savings and weight distribution, while greatly increasing the cars crash-worthiness.
