2013 Volkswagen Golf GTI Review and Specs

The 2013 Volkswagen Golf GTI is now powered by a version of the existing 2.0-litre four cylinder turbocharged engine delivering 200 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque. As with the last-gen model, all that power is delivered to the front wheels via either a six-speed “DSG” Dual-clutch automatic transmission or a six-speed manual gearbox. Those opting for the DSG automatic transmission will get both a set of paddle shifters and a manual shift gate on the gear shifter. Fuel economy ranges from 21 city and 31 highway on the standard six-speed stick, to 24 city, 33 highway miles per gallon with the six-speed DSG automatic.

The seventh generation of the Volkswagen Golf is destined to hit the marketplace later on this year and it’s now believed that the new Golf GTI model will make 260 horsepower and the front differential will get some new technology to keep all that massive power from turning into tire smoke.
Those of you looking at the standard Volkswagen Golf models will have plenty of engine choices like a 1.8L and 2.0L standard gasoline engine, a 2.0L diesel with 181-hp and 280 lb-ft of torque, a twin-turbo GTD with 220-hp, and a 1.4L turbo gasoline engine sporting 138-hp.

2013 Golf GTI Will Sport 260 Horsepower

Not only will the Golf GTI come with more power, but a “more agile steering behavior” thanks to a brand new VAQ electronically controlled front differential, which apparently is 8 seconds faster round the Nurburgring than the conventional mechanical differential.

Further drive-line changes for the Golf include the addition of a more advanced stability control system on all front-wheel-drive Golf models. Previously only found on the Golf GTI, it will prevent wheel spin by constantly monitoring traction on the front wheels.

Few details about the Golf’s chassis have been revealed but looks as it will be sold with two different suspension systems depending on the engine it runs. In a move mirroring that of the latest Beetle, lower-end models will receive MacPherson struts and a torsion beam. Higher end models get a more advanced combination of MacPherson struts  and multi-links – a combination found on all sixth-generation Golf models.

If the 260 hp version some how does not make it to the 2013 models there will be a Performance enhancement pack available.

For the first time ever, the Golf GTI will be available with a genuine factory fitted performance pack that will boost power to 227bhp. This means the GTI can cover the 0-62mph sprint in a claimed 6.5 seconds and top speed is upped to 155mph. To safely use the higher power output there are bigger front brake discs and a front axle differential lock to help reduce power related under-steer to improve handling.

Volkswagen Golf GTI’s will come in a three door and a five door version, though exact specifications and prices are yet to be set for the UK. The GTI is anticipated to go on sale in the summer of 2013.
