Engine Friction Reducers What Works?

Many engine friction reducer treatments claim to work to reduce your engines friction, but when tested did not a work any better than a synthetic motor oil. We put some of these engine friction reducer additives to the test to see what results we would get. Most all friction reducer additives will reduce your engines friction, but only to a very small degree, which may not be easy noticeable.

What are engine friction reducing additives suppose to do? They should give you better gas mileage, more horsepower and a longer lasting motor. There are many engine friction reducer additives out on the market today, but do they really work as claimed? We used our 1985 corvette with a stock 350 TPI engine as our test mule, to see what gains we could really achieve. We wanted to make this test perfect, so to start off the corvette was given an oil change using 5 quarts of 5w30 synthetic Castrol motor oil along with a new oil filter. We did the oil change as we wanted fresh oil in the motor so would be giving the best reduction in motor friction to start off with. This engine friction reducer additive test was going to be on the expensive side. Our plan is to change the motor oil four times. Each different additive we tested, we wanted to test it in brand new fresh motor oil.

The friction reducer additives we choose to test were Torco MPZ, Slick 50, Revo and Dura lube. We will not go through each test separately step by step, we basically will just give you the final testing results. We made sure to do all the tests on the same day so the weather or temperature was the same for all the friction reducing additives. Just some back ground information. Our 1985 corvette has always run on 5w30 Castrol synthetic motor oil and the usual normal engine temperature is about 190 degrees while at an idle of 700 rpm. We know the normal idle range and we know the normal engine temperature range, now we can compare this information with the changes that occur with each friction reducing additive tested.

Our first test was done using Torco MPZ engine friction reducer additive. After the motor was at normal operating temperature, we noted the engine temperature had dropped one degree from what it normally was. Also we noted the idle rpm did not change, it stayed the same at 700 rpm.

Our second test was done with Revo engine friction reducer additive. After the motor again reached normal operating temperature, we noted there was no change at all in motor temperature, it was back down by one degree to our normal 190 degree normal engine temperature. Also the idle rpm was the same as before 700 rpm, so no changes at all with this product.

Our third test was done using Slick 50 engine friction reducer additive. After the motor was once again at normal operating temperature, we noted there was no change at all in motor temperature from what it normally was. Also we noted the idle rpm did not change, it stayed the same as before the test at 700 rpm.

Our fourth test was done using Dura Lube engine treatment friction reducer. After the motor was once again at normal operating temperature, we noted there was a five degree drop in engine temperature. We also noted an increase in idle rpm, it went up 100 rpm to 800 rpm. The drop in engine temperature and the increase in idle rpm, clearly showed that Dura Lube engine treatment did reduce engine friction better than the other engine treatments in our test vehicle.

We took the Corvette out for a drive and noted a small power increase you could feel. It is very clear that this engine friction reducer reduced engine friction! Yes, the other anti-friction additives would have most likely shown an improvement if we were using plain old 5w30 conventional motor oil, as the synthetic Castrol motor oil would greatly reduce engine friction on its own. Dura Lube worked extra great, even with a superior motor oil in our Corvette 350 engine. It cost us a little time and money, but we wanted to know which engine friction reducer treatment we should be using to actually get an advantage we could see from the product, we found our winner and will always use it from now on.

I hope this friction reducer engine treatment test has helped a few out there who wish to know which product may work best for your vehicle.
