2003-2004 Mustang Mach 1 Review and Specs

Mustang Mach 1 with the 4.6L 32 valve DOHC engine was offered only two years, 2003 and 2004, rated at 305 Horsepower @ 6000 RPM and 320 LBS torque @ 4250 RPM. The 2003 to 2004 Mustang Mach 1 is a 32 valve DOHC engine which is similar to the Mustang Cobra except being naturally aspirated with an aluminum block and different engine internal components. Also, the GT Mustang is a 4.6 SOHC 16 valve engine and is not the same as the Mach 1 4.6L 32 valve DOHC engine. The 4.6L DOHC engines are much more responsive to aftermarket mods and have greater potential. By the way, the weak spots in these DOHC engines are the pistons and connecting rods.

The Ford Mustang Mach 1 factory package lowers the vehicle one half of an inch, it also has a much firmer suspension for over all improved road handling. The Mach 1 handling package includes special front and rear coil springs with adapted load and spring rates. Mach 1 Mustangs all came factory with Tokico struts and shocks, unique stabilizer bars in the front and rear, plus added factory frame rail connectors to stiffen up the Mach 1 body. You also received big thirteen inch front rotors, with performance Brembo brake calipers which provided excellent stopping capability. The brake calipers came with a black-anodized finish which looked nice through factory 17 inch Magnum 500 wheels and worked well with standard anti-lock brakes and traction control.

The 2003-2004 Mustang Mach 1 package was a favorite for many due to the Mach 1’s appearance, ride, handling, braking, performance and that great looking Shaker hood reminiscent of the original 1969 Mach 1. All this along with some very eye catching exterior colors as Black – 1064 produced, Dark Shadow Gray – 1039 produced, Azure Blue – 1316 produced, Torch Red – 1259 produced, Oxford White – 697 produced, Competition Orange – 1039 produced, Screaming Yellow – 768 produced. It was just too much appeal, people couldn’t help but look at the Mach 1 and smile!

It has been reported that the 5 speed manual transmissions are more reliable and much stronger than the automatic transmissions for these years of Mustang Mach 1. With a 5 speed manual the Mach 1 weighed in at 3469 lbs and is the best choice of transmissions to have if going to add performance mods.
